Details
Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo has been subverting cultural normative and industry traditions for years and has spawned an empire within the sphere of fashion and art. Kawakubo began her ascent in the fashion world in 1969 when she established the label. It was during the early ’70s when her collection was shown in Tokyo that she developed her craft and attention to detail. By 1981 she had garnered enough support that she was able to show in Paris for the first time, shocking the establishment at the time with her oversized, dark and unconventional garments. In an epoch when designers favored more gaudy and hyper-sexualized styles, Kawakubo challenged what was considered flattering on a woman’s body. Since then the brand has grown to include many sub-labels and multiple designers, with Kawakubo remaining as the creative force for the label and her husband Adrian Joffe handling the business-oriented side, including the renowned retail space Dover Street Market. This black tee features a tonal black print of The Rolling Stone’s famous lips-‘n’-tongue logo by Andy Warhol.
