Background
Shortly after graduating with a degree in Law from Keio University in 1966, Yohji Yamamoto realized that a Law career was not for him. Offering to help at his Mother’s shop he was set under her sewing assistants. Alongside, he enrolled in the prestigious Bunka Fashion College which has taught the likes of Jun Takahashi, Junya Watanabe, and Tsumori Chisato. In 1977 at Tokyo Fashion Week, he showed his first women’s ready-to-wear line pinned as “Y’s,” shortly followed by “Y’s For Men.” In attempt to create a more accessible range, the clothes were predominantly day-to-day pieces, whilst sticking to his design ethos of gloomy shades, superb fabrics, and bellowing cuts. This line came to an end in 2009 due to over-expansion and poor financial management. The slim silhouette done on the traditional work jacket displays his overlooked more playful approach, done here on a navy base floral print.
